Something Changed: Every book I read in the past 12 months. →
In December 2010 I decided to use Tumblr to record every book I read for 12 months using the tag Currently, short for “currently reading.”
I love reading. I was worried that so much time spent on the internet for both fun and work might make me forget how much I love books. My theory was that consciously recording my reading behaviour would somehow encourage me to read more (“you are what you pay attention to.”) It worked.
… Basically, the trick to reading a lot is to make it fun and nothing at all like homework.
… I’m undecided about whether to continue the experiment next year. But I would if other people wanted to play “Currently” too. It could be nice to do it together?
I think I would like this. I probably won’t read anywhere near as many books as Jessica did, but I like the idea of paying attention to my reading while making it “nothing at all like homework.”
That means not worrying about the number of books I read and not wondering whether I should be writing reviews of some sort to justify putting my reading on the internet. A cover image is record enough.
I’ve been wanting to read more anyway. I have this theory that reading is good for my writing. And my mood. So yeah, I’m in for the next round. Will anyone else join me?
